Do Dreams Come True? Cruise Ship Jobs

What’s your ideal job? Is it that kind of work that gets you well paid and takes you around the world? That gives you sunny days all year long and provides you with lots of opportunities to make friends from all over the world?

My answer is simple: Do dreams come true? With cruise ship jobs they do!

Although working onboard a cruise ship does require hard work and discipline, respect of a 6 day working schedule, constantly smiling and being polite, and sharing the accommodations with other crew members, cruise ship jobs do represent a lifetime, sometimes life changing experience, one that each of us secretly dreams of. You work hard, but you earn an attractive salary. With no expenditures to look after, you get to see extraordinary, exotic places. Could one wish for more?

Job opportunities are endless, as living onboard cruise ships is like living on a luxurious island. Every profession is needed. Take your chance, knowing, though, that there are certain requirements cruise ship companies expect you to meet, specific to each department.

Educational background, certificates, past work experience…

From an educational point of view, you are expected to have at least a high school diploma, or the equivalent, even for entry-level jobs. Fluency in English is a must, while having the conversational basics in Spanish, French, or Portuguese is highly appreciated.

Cruise lines’ requirements are even higher when employing on officer-level positions or on jobs with more responsibilities. College degrees and substantial past work experience are necessary. And most of the cruise staff members have an entertainment background.

Also, the technical positions, such as those from the Engine Room Department, require special training. Physicians and nurses must be licensed to practice medicine. Experience and proper training is a must for child-care workers, chefs and sommeliers.

Employers in the cruise ship field also look for applicants with excellent communication skills, who are outgoing, hardworking and friendly. They must enjoy working with people, as it is crucial to impress passengers in a positive way. Cruise ship personnel should always be neatly dressed and well behaved at all times.
